{"id":416,"date":"2019-10-02T13:30:35","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T18:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dashiellbarkhuss.com\/discomfortblog\/?p=416"},"modified":"2019-10-02T13:49:24","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T18:49:24","slug":"day-38-no-spices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dashiellbarkhuss.com\/discomfortblog\/day-38-no-spices\/","title":{"rendered":"Day 38: No Spices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For day 38 of #100DaysofDiscomfort I gave up spices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>vinegar<\/li><li>spices<\/li><li>stevia<\/li><li>condiments<\/li><li>herbal tea<\/li><li>flavored water <\/li><li>foods that are used for the purpose of flavor like garlic<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This discomfort is based on the stoic exercise of practicing poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cSet aside a certain number of days, during which you shall be content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with coarse and rough dress, saying to yourself the while: \u2018Is this the condition that I feared?\u2019\u201d<\/p><cite>-Seneca&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Easing is my me-time. I love food. And I take special care to spice my food until I\u2019m satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spicy, sweet, salty, sour, fragrant. I need all the flavors. When I sit down to eat, I continue to spice my meal with every bite at the table. I don\u2019t waste a single calorie on a less than perfect bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My spicing habit is truly a luxury. Spices cost money but have little nutrition. And spicing takes time. Especially when you prepare all your meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if one day I can only afford to eat bland foods? Could I handle it? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this discomfort, I practiced poverty and cut out all unnecessary flavorings as well as any packaged foods, since these come with spices and flavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, I did use salt because it\u2019s an electrolyte which keeps me from feeling dizzy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happened&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I made all the food I normally do but left out the spices, vinegar, and stevia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My keto chocolate chips have sweeteners and flavors so I nixed them. Likewise, I ate avocado in my dinner instead of my usual sweetened avocado smoothie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dinner was trickier, because I couldn&#8217;t imagine a salad without vinegar or lemon juice. I usually make a big salad with a vinegar based dressing including spices, stevia, and sometimes a nut butter. Instead, I saut\u00e9ed my salad with peanut butter, water, and salt. No vinegar or spices. It was great! Would it be good as a raw salad? I don\u2019t know!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Menu<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the ingredients <strong>I ate <\/strong><em>vs<\/em> what <strong>I normally eat<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breakfast<\/strong>: Beef, blueberries, salt, almond butter,<s>&nbsp;<em> cinnamon, apple cider vinegar, stevia<\/em><\/s><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Post workout:<\/strong> Cashews, salt, water,&nbsp;<em> <\/em><s><em>cacao, cinnamon, vanilla extract, stevia<\/em><\/s><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Snack:<\/strong> <s><em>Lily\u2019s chocolate<\/em><\/s><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lunch:<\/strong> Clams, eggs, salmon, cauliflower, salt, chicken broth,<em><s> smoked paprika, black pepper, garlic, apple cider vinegar <\/s><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(I should have left the chicken broth out, that was an accident)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Snack:<\/strong> <em><s>Smart Sweets<\/s><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pre-Meditation:<\/strong> <s><em>Herbal tea, vinegar, stevia <\/em><\/s><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dinner<\/strong>: Chicken, beef, broccoli, mushrooms, green pepper, spinach, lettuce, cashews, avocado, peanut butter, salt,<em> <s>Zevia ginger-ale, <\/s><\/em><s><em>stevia, ginger, garlic, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, cayenne, black pepper.<\/em><\/s><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dessert<\/strong>: <s><em>Avocado, stevia, vanilla<\/em><\/s><em> <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Refreshment:<\/strong> <em><s>Flavored<\/s><\/em> Seltzer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What I Learned&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I enjoyed all my food, despite the lack of spices. In truth, this challenge brought me relief. Even though I love my food spiced, I learned I\u2019m not shackled to spices. I could enjoy food without them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a part of me that felt reliant on the luxury of spices. It\u2019s never a good feeling to be dependent on a luxury. If I\u2019m ever in a position where I have little time or money, I know now I don\u2019t have to fear cutting corners on spices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For day 38 of #100DaysofDiscomfort I gave up spices.
