{"id":426,"date":"2019-10-03T18:20:30","date_gmt":"2019-10-03T23:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dashiellbarkhuss.com\/discomfortblog\/?p=426"},"modified":"2019-10-03T18:20:32","modified_gmt":"2019-10-03T23:20:32","slug":"day-39-getting-things-done-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dashiellbarkhuss.com\/discomfortblog\/day-39-getting-things-done-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Day 39: Getting Things Done System"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For day 38 of <a href=\"http:\/\/dashiellbarkhuss.com\/30daysofdiscomfort.html\">#100DaysOfDiscomfort<\/a> I spent a week trying out the <a href=\"https:\/\/gettingthingsdone.com\">Getting Things Done<\/a> system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discomforts Addressed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Learning something new<\/li><li>Effort\u00a0<\/li><li>Investing time\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because I\u2019m taking on more and more projects, I feel unorganized and hectic. Hopefully, the small discomfort of learning the GTD system will clear my mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea behind GTD is if you have a system in place, you can be an extremely busy person but feel totally relaxed. Your mind is clear. You know you can manage your projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did it go.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I first learned about GTD on the Tim Ferris podcast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand the system more, I watched a few videos on YouTube, and a 30 minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/learning\/getting-things-done\/benefits-of-getting-things-done\">GTD LinkedIn Learned tutorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GTD is complex. David Allen said it can take 2 years to feel comfortable with it. So this week I focused on the basics; the capture list, next actions, and projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I took 30 minutes every day to go through my capture list; writing every task, thought, and errand down. With every thing written down I cleared my mind of distracting thoughts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a week, I found that I need more guidance on the system. Specifically, managing and organizing the to-do lists overwhelms me. My friends told me the book will provide more clarity. So I ordered the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What I Learned&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s going to take some time to get fully organized. So I\u2019m glad I\u2019m starting now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discomfort I felt from getting busy is important. Discomfort is a signal. A signal that something needs to change. In this case, it signaled that I was about to burn out. So I knew I needed to change something.
