{"id":471,"date":"2019-10-12T20:23:21","date_gmt":"2019-10-13T01:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dashiellbarkhuss.com\/discomfortblog\/?p=471"},"modified":"2019-10-13T19:02:32","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T00:02:32","slug":"day-48-read-routine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dashiellbarkhuss.com\/discomfortblog\/day-48-read-routine\/","title":{"rendered":"Day 48: Reading Routine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There\u2019s a movement of people committing themselves to read 52 books for 52 weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I met a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/poor_bjorns_notes_to_self\/\">guy on instagram<\/a> who nearly does this challenge, named Bjorn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Picture after picture, Bjorn finished so many interesting books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wondered, <em>if I read a book a week, how would I be different? What would I know now?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In truth, I\u2019m not necessarily sure I\u2019d want read that much. I have priorities and I\u2019m a slow reader. Reading a book a week could cut into my progress. But the concept interests me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I asked Bjorn how much he reads. He said 7 hours per week. So I decided to commit to half of that and read 30 minutes per day for a week. It was a busy week, so even that seemed daunting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wanting to get more organized, I bought the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Getting-Things-Done-Stress-Free-Productivity\/dp\/0143126563\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?keywords=Getting+Things+Done:+The+Art+of+Stress-Free+Productivity&amp;qid=1567488141&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-3&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=offsitoftimfe-20&amp;linkId=085e536a69f254899f8977fe442becc9&amp;language=en_US\">Getting Things Done<\/a> and committed to reading it this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Did It Go&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I kept to my commitment and spent 30 minutes a day reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have to say, I\u2019m not sure I enjoy <em>reading<\/em> the book. It\u2019s really a manual. To grasp it fully, I probably need to implement the organization strategies.&nbsp;But I value the information because I\u2019m desperate to organize my workflow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, while I wouldn\u2019t say this is a fun read, I\u2019m glad I read a good chunk of the book. And I\u2019m closer to understanding the GTD method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Did I Learn&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I learned that in 30 minutes I get around 10 pages of reading done. So I&#8217;m a pretty slow reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found it extremely hard to concentrate and I believe this is due to sleep deprivation. Which makes reading this book all the more important. I have to get my life more organized to I can get more sleep. But I also need more sleep to read the book. Hmmmm&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I probably would have enjoyed this challenge more if I read a different book. But alas, it&#8217;s not called #100DaysOfEnjoyment! Yet, I really like the book because I find the information valuable. Sometimes we have to push through the discomfort in order to get somewhere we want to be.
