Hosted a Dance Improv Party
What is dance improv?
If you don’t know what dance improv is, it usually consists of giving some sort of prompt or setting up a game before you dance. One example is flocking, where you mimic the movements of a changing leader. After you’ve done a lot of dance improv, you don’t need prompts, and you can just pick up on what the game is. In some of my friend groups, we pick up on the game naturally without ever having done dance improv together.
To me, dance improv feels more like being in a music video. Regular dancing at parties often feels like you are just awkwardly bending your knees with a bunch of people. Dance improv feels interactive, social, and creative. Dance parties feel isolated and stiff.
I’m of the opinion that all dance parties should have some dance improv. Dance improv is just so much more fun, and everyone ends up dancing way more.
Our dance improv agenda
For our dance improv night, we started with a prompt, executed it for one song, and then talked about it afterward, which helped us be more cohesive the next time and gave us some time to catch our breath. Then we moved on to the next prompt and repeated the process.
These were all of our prompts:
- Dance with your hands only. One person goes at a time, then passes it to the next person.
- Dance lying on your back with your feet. One person goes at a time, then passes it to the next person.
- Dance sitting in a circle with your feet.
- Dance while paying attention only to yourself. Start on the floor, slowly making your way up and exploring your space.
- Everyone, one at a time, pick a song and lead the group.
- Sit on the couch and use your phone to make a shadow. Make your shadow dance.

The state of mind opposite mochin d’katnut is mochin d’gadlut, expanded consciousness. The entire path of Torah – prayer, study, mitzvot – all seek to elevate the individual to this state of mind. One then grasps the higher truths of reality, even though they may be paradoxical. The mind takes in the entire picture. A “narrow-minded” person is someone who can only see one point of view, but a “broad-minded” person can consider many opinions, even those that contradict his own. In fact, one of the truest indications of an authentic mystical experience is its paradoxical nature. The mind transcends its limitations to grasp two visions of reality at once.
